What is the Vandal Housing Project?
The Vandal Housing Project is a $162.8 million investment effort to modernize and expand student housing at the University of Idaho. This initiative will deliver new and renovated student housing options to support academic success, student engagement and the University’s continued growth. The project includes:
- South Hill Apartments:
451 new construction beds for graduate and married-family students

Theophilus Tower:
394 renovated beds and modernized shared spaces to inspire collaboration, recreation and community.

Wallace Residence Center:
1056 renovated beds to create contemporary undergraduate student housing.
These improvements give students affordable, high-quality and sustainable housing that enhances their college experience.
Why is the University of Idaho upgrading its on-campus student housing facilities?
The University of Idaho recently achieved R1 Carnegie Research status and as a result, it is critical to provide modern, high-quality housing options that attract and retain top talent, including graduate students and post-doc researchers. Many of the University’s existing student housing facilities were built decades ago and require significant updates to meet today’s standards for comfort, sustainability and community engagement.
Upgrades include both new construction and renovation of existing buildings:
- Enhances the student experience by providing updated, well-equipped spaces for studying, socializing and relaxing
- Supports growing enrollment and ensures students have affordable, high-quality living options
- Aligns with national trends, as universities across the country invest in modern, student-focused housing facilities

How is the project being funded?
The Vandal Housing Project is funded through university-issued long-term bonds, which were approved by the Idaho State Board of Education

Will the University of Idaho continue to operate and manage the new and renovated student housing?
Yes. The University of Idaho will continue to fully operate and manage all new and renovated student housing.
This includes:

Residence life operations
– Hiring, training and managing Resident Advisors (RAs), Community Assistants and housing staff

Housing assignments & leasing
– Ensuring a seamless housing application and placement process for students

Facility maintenance
– Providing ongoing upkeep, cleaning and operational management to maintain high living standards
Students will continue to receive the support, engagement and resources that make campus living valuable and enriching.
